General Purpose Chain – Grade 30, Grade 43, Windlass, Stainless & Hardware Chain
Our General Purpose Chain collection is designed for non-lifting applications, offering a variety of versatile chains for everyday use. Whether you're securing loads, anchoring, towing, or general utility, these chains are not rated for overhead lifting but serve countless other purposes in marine, industrial, and residential settings. From zinc-plated and galvanized chain to stainless steel and windlass-specific chain, we have options for almost every job.
Types of General Purpose Chain We Offer:
- Grade 30 Proof Coil Chain (Zinc Plated) – A light-duty chain commonly used for tie-downs, barriers, and general utility. Zinc plating offers basic corrosion resistance, making it suitable for indoor and some outdoor uses. Not for lifting or load-securement applications governed by DOT regulations.
- Grade 43 High-Test Chain (Galvanized) – A stronger, more durable option than Grade 30, often used for load securement, towing, and heavy-duty tie-downs. However, industry standards have largely shifted toward Grade 70 transport chain for DOT-regulated load securement and towing applications. While Grade 43 is still legal in some cases, Grade 70 is preferred due to its superior strength and compliance with FMCSA regulations. Always check local and federal regulations before using Grade 43 for transport or towing.
- ACCO Grade 43 Windlass Chain (Hot Dip Galvanized) – Specifically engineered to work with windlass anchor systems on boats. Unlike regular Grade 43, windlass chain is manufactured to precise dimensions to fit properly in windlass gypsies (the chain wheel that engages the chain). Important: Regular Grade 43 chain is not windlass compatible. Customers must select chain marked as “Windlass” and ensure they choose the correct diameter for their equipment.
- 316 Stainless Steel Chain – Offers superior corrosion resistance, making it ideal for marine, food processing, and chemical environments where rust and corrosion are major concerns. Available in a variety of sizes, 316 stainless chain is a premium choice for decorative, safety, and functional uses where appearance and longevity matter. Not rated for lifting.
- Straight Link Coil Chain – A lightweight utility chain used for barriers, gates, animal control, and general household or commercial use. Comes in a variety of sizes for different applications.
- Machine Chain – A small-link utility chain, commonly used for hanging fixtures, supporting light equipment, and general utility purposes. Ideal for indoor use or mild outdoor environments where heavy strength is not required.
Important Notes on General Purpose Chain Use:
- Not Rated for Lifting – Chains listed on this page are not certified for overhead lifting and do not meet ASME B30.9 or OSHA lifting standards.
- Grade 43 vs. Grade 70 for Load Securement & Towing – While Grade 43 was once a standard for towing and transport tie-downs, FMCSA and industry best practices now favor Grade 70 chains due to their higher strength and compliance with modern regulations. Always ensure the chain you use meets DOT regulations for transport applications.
- Windlass Chain Requirements – Windlass anchor systems require specialized chain to function correctly. Do not use standard Grade 43 chain in a windlass system. Customers must select properly marked Windlass Chain and verify correct link size for their equipment.
- Corrosion Resistance Options – For harsh or marine environments, galvanized chain offers strong rust resistance, while 316 stainless steel chain provides the highest level of corrosion protection.
Common Uses for General Purpose Chain:
- Marine anchoring and mooring (Windlass and stainless options)
- Load securement and towing (Grade 43, where permitted; Grade 70 preferred)
- Barriers, crowd control, and safety (Straight link chain)
- General utility and hanging applications (Machine chain)
- Decorative and architectural use (Stainless steel chain)
