General Purpose Chain — Grade 30, Grade 43 & Utility Hardware Chain
Overview: This category covers versatile, non-lifting chain for everyday use in shops, job sites, facilities, and around the home. Options include Grade 30 proof coil, Grade 43 high-test, and common utility hardware chains. These products are great for tie-downs, barriers, gates, and general purpose securement where overhead lifting is not involved. Not rated for overhead lifting.
Types of Chain We Offer Here:
- Grade 30 Proof Coil (Zinc Plated or Galvanized) – Light-duty utility chain for tie-downs, barriers, and general use. Zinc plating provides basic corrosion resistance; galvanized options offer improved outdoor durability. Not for lifting or DOT-regulated load securement.
- Grade 43 High-Test (Galvanized) – Stronger than Grade 30 and commonly used for load securement, towing, and heavy-duty tie-downs. Note: The Grade 43 chain listed on this page is standard G43 (non-windlass) and is not dimensioned for windlass gypsies. For windlass anchor chain, see our dedicated Marine Chain page.
- Straight Link (Coil) Chain – General utility chain for barriers, gates, animal control, signage, and light hanging tasks. Popular where an economical, easy-to-handle chain is needed.
- Machine Chain – Small-link utility chain commonly used to hang fixtures, support light equipment, and for general indoor applications where high strength is not required.
Important Notes:
- Not Rated for Lifting – Chains on this page are not certified for overhead lifting and do not meet ASME B30.9 or OSHA lifting standards.
- Transport & Towing – While Grade 43 has historically been used for transport/towing, industry best practice and FMCSA/DOT applications commonly specify Grade 70 transport chain for compliance. Always verify local and federal regulations.
- Windlass Compatibility – Standard Grade 43 listed here is not windlass-compatible. For windlass anchor chain (Peerless ACCO Windlass ISO) and Type 316 stainless options, please see our Marine Chain page.
- Corrosion Resistance – Choose galvanized for robust outdoor protection and zinc-plated for basic indoor/mild outdoor use. For saltwater/marine environments, see Type 316 stainless on our Marine Chain page.
Common Uses:
- General load securement and towing (where permitted; Grade 70 preferred for DOT)
- Barriers, crowd control, gates, signage, and safety delineation
- General utility and hanging applications (fixtures, light equipment)
- Agricultural, construction, and facility maintenance tasks
- General marine utility (not windlass anchor chain; see Marine Chain page for windlass)
