Fall Protection Harnesses & Body Belts – Safety, Comfort, and Performance

Fall protection harnesses are required personal protective equipment (PPE) for any worker exposed to fall hazards at 6 feet or more in general industry, or 4 feet in construction, per OSHA standards. At Bishop Lifting, we stock full body harnesses, construction harnesses, and positioning harnesses from trusted brands including 3M Protecta, Guardian, Werner, and DEWALT. Whether you're working on a roof, scaffolding, or elevated structure, find the right harness for your job here.

At Lifting.com, we offer an extensive selection of fall protection harnesses and body belts tailored to meet diverse industry needs. Whether you're looking for a full-body harness for fall arrest or a body belt for work positioning, we have the right solution for your safety requirements.

Types of Fall Protection Harnesses & Body Belts:

  • Standard Harnesses – Equipped with a single dorsal (back) D-ring, minimal padding, and essential safety features, these harnesses provide reliable fall protection for general compliance and occasional use.
  • Construction Harnesses – Designed specifically for construction professionals, these harnesses feature waist belts for hanging tools and increased padding for all-day comfort.Climbing Harnesses – Ergonomic and lightweight, these harnesses have D-rings on the chest and hips, making them ideal for professional climbing, tower work, and specialized rigging.
  • Body Belts – Unlike full-body harnesses, body belts only wrap around the waist and are designed for work positioning, not fall arrest. These belts, such as the FallTech 7055, provide a secure tie-off point while allowing hands-free work in controlled environments. They are commonly used in construction, utility work, and lineman applications where fall hazards are not a concern.

FAQ SECTION

Q: What is the difference between a fall arrest harness and a positioning harness? A: A fall arrest harness is designed to stop a worker after a fall occurs, using a dorsal D-ring and a connecting lanyard or SRL to limit the fall to 6 feet and arrest forces to 1,800 lbs. A positioning harness allows a worker to lean into the harness and work hands-free on a vertical surface using side D-rings, but it is not designed for fall arrest on its own. Most full body harnesses combine both functions with dorsal and side D-rings, giving workers versatility for both scenarios on a single job site.

Q: How often should a fall protection harness be inspected? A: A fall protection harness must be visually inspected by the worker before every use, checking for frayed webbing, damaged buckles, worn stitching, and missing or illegible labels. A formal competent-person inspection must be performed at least annually. Any harness involved in a fall arrest event — regardless of visible damage — must be immediately removed from service and destroyed or retired.

Q: What OSHA standard applies to fall protection harnesses? A: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502 governs fall protection in construction and requires harnesses to be worn at heights of 6 feet or more. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.140 covers personal fall protection systems in general industry. Both standards require full body harnesses for fall arrest — body belts are no longer approved for fall arrest under any OSHA standard and may only be used as a positioning device.

Q: Can I reuse a harness after it has caught a fall? A: No. A fall protection harness that has been subjected to a fall arrest event must be immediately removed from service, even if no visible damage is present. The forces generated during fall arrest stretch and permanently deform the webbing and hardware, reducing its protective capability. The harness must be tagged, rendered unusable, and replaced before the worker returns to work at height.

Q: What brands of fall protection harnesses does Bishop Lifting carry? A: Bishop Lifting stocks fall protection harnesses from leading manufacturers including 3M Protecta, Guardian Fall Protection, Werner, and DEWALT. All brands carried meet ANSI/ASSE Z359 standards and OSHA compliance requirements for construction and general industry applications.
