Product Description

2.25 lbs. Dayton axe head outfitted with a 28" curved hickory handle. Popularly referred to as a "boy’s" axe. A "mid" sized tool. Dayton pattern originated from the Dayton, Ohio, area. In September of 2023 the iconic Boy's Axe undergoes an upgrade.

The overall side profile closely resembles more vintage and historic versions of the Dayton Pattern axe head.

By moving the eye forward and towards the bit, it extends the back of the axe/poll and gives it better balance from front to back.

This "balance" improves accuracy and efficiency, while making it safer to use.

This forward eye also creates a slightly thicker upper cheek in front of the eye, to help with medium/light splitting.

Whether it’s used for felling, limbing, bucking, chopping, splitting and driving felling wedges on smaller trees, the new Boy's Axe will be able to live up to it’s heritage.

  • Forged tool steel head, Made in USA
  • Hand sharpened, tapered bit for cutting and light splitting
  • ANSI Standards call for bit hardness of Rc 45-60, at least 1/2" back from the cutting edge
    • Council Tool internal standards call for tempered bit hardness of Rc 48-55 and we target 1-1/4" from the cutting edge
    • The poll and eye walls are not hardened and remain in the as forged condition
  • Head coated with boiled Linseed Oil over the as forged finish
  • 28" curved American hickory handle
    • Eye section is dried to below 10% moisture content to minimize shrinkage and help prevent loosening
    • Hafted high and proud
  • Axe head is hydraulically seated onto handle and secured with a traditional double wedge system
  • The interior detail of the eye is tapered and allows for a strong mechanical bond
    • Approximately 1/4" of overall length of the handle is removed during assembly

I'm very happy with this purchase. The axe I received was well put together, sharp, straight and nice handle. Buy it. Shipping from WRS was quick. Thank You.

Cool axe

It's an axe, for sure. Not a felling axe for those of you looking for one, but if you want one for chopping up downed branches it's pretty darn good axe. Good handle, well weighted head and it came sharp and with a little rubber blade guard.

The forged head comes with a very usably sharp edge right out of the box. It appears to be very solidly locked into the handle. The handle has a nice curve at the tail end but could stand to have a greater hook to secure your hand. The handle on mine is very light in color, not nearly as dark as in the photo above. It does not seem to have the oil finish as described; feels more like a polyurethane coating--I would have preferred oil. Also, would have been nice to have a more carefully selected piece of Hickory.

I think Derek ^ was asking if this is the "sport utility" version of the boys axe. Council tool currently offers this axe in 3 levels. The "standard" with the head painted red, the "sport utility" that's sharpened with a better grade handle and black paint on head, and then the "velvicut" version with "select grade" handle and a polished hand sharpened head. Yes, this axe is part of Council's new "Sport Utility" lineup, and the same as this axe.

We're not sure exactly what you mean by utility. We can say that this size of axe is commonly thought of as a "boy's axe" or a "camp axe" (not to be confused with a hatchet) because it is lightweight and useful, adaptable to a variety of chore--light splitting or chopping--and something that most people can handle.

No, this is the axe only, sheath sold separately.
