Product Description

Crosby IPU10 & IPU10J Vertical Lifting Clamps — The Standard for Safe, Heavy-Duty Plate Lifting and Handling

The Crosby IPU10 Vertical Lifting Clamp is the industry standard for safe and efficient lifting, turning, moving, and vertical transfer of steel plates, sheets, and fabrications. Designed for 180-degree rotation, these versatile clamps allow you to lift material from horizontal to vertical and back again with ease. Whether used in steel fabrication, construction, shipbuilding, or industrial manufacturing, IPU10 clamps deliver reliable performance and unmatched safety.

Available in capacities from 0.5 to 30 tons and jaw openings ranging from 0 inches to 6.13 inches, the IPU10 series covers everything from thin plate handling to ultra-heavy structural lifting. Clamp weights range from approximately 4.19 lbs to 364 lbs, depending on the model and capacity.

Standard IPU10 vs. IPU10J Range — Jaw Opening Options

The Crosby IPU10 series comes in two versions to suit different plate thicknesses:

  • Standard IPU10 models feature jaw openings from 0 inches to 3.13 inches (0 – 80 mm), ideal for common steel plate handling.
  • IPU10J models are designed for handling thicker plates, with jaw openings from 0.63 inches to 6.13 inches (16 – 156 mm).

Both ranges offer the same great features, certifications, and performance — the IPU10J simply provides a wider jaw opening for larger materials.

Key Features of Crosby IPU10 and IPU10J Vertical Lifting Clamps:

  • Wide capacity range from 0.5 ton to 30 tons — ideal for small shops and heavy industry.
  • Jaw openings up to 6.13 inches with IPU10J models, for thicker plate handling.
  • Full 180-degree rotation for vertical lifting, turning, and precise material placement.
  • Hinged hoisting eye allows for lifting from any direction or multi-leg slings, without side-loading the clamp.
  • Lock open and lock closed latch system for pre-tensioning on material and secure release.
  • Special hook-up points on 12-ton and larger clamps for easier positioning in horizontal orientation.
  • Welded alloy steel body for high strength and compact design, with forged alloy components where additional durability is required.
  • Individually proof tested to 2x the Working Load Limit (WLL), with test certificates included.
  • Permanently stamped with Crosby IP name, WLL, jaw opening, serial number, and proof test date for full traceability.
  • Compatible with materials up to 363 HV10 (345 HB) surface hardness, depending on load applied.
  • Designed to meet or exceed EN 13155 and ASME B30.20 standards.
  • Maintenance and repair kits available to extend service life and ensure safe operation over time.

Applications:

  • Lifting, turning, and vertical transfer of steel plates and sheets.
  • Rotating large fabricated components for welding, machining, or assembly.
  • Handling structural steel parts in construction and fabrication yards.
  • Plate movement and positioning in shipyards, steel service centers, and industrial manufacturing.

Surface Hardness and Minimum Load Guidelines:

To ensure safe gripping and performance, the surface hardness of the material and the minimum percentage of WLL applied must be properly matched:

  • For materials up to 363 HV10 (345 HB):
    • The 0.5-ton (0.5t) model may be used with a minimum load as low as 5% of its WLL.
    • All larger IPU10 and IPU10J models (above 0.5t) require a minimum load of 10% of their WLL when handling materials of this hardness.
  • For materials up to 279 HV10 (softer materials):
    • All IPU10 and IPU10J models, including larger sizes, may be used with a minimum load of 5% of WLL.

Following these guidelines ensures that the clamp’s jaws engage securely and safely based on the load and material hardness, maintaining optimal performance across all applications.

Safety and Usage Reminders:

  • Do not exceed rated Working Load Limit (WLL).
  • Not for lifting or suspending personnel — NOT man-rated.
  • Ensure material surface hardness is within specified limits (363 HV10 or 279 HV10 depending on load applied).
  • Inspect clamps and gripping surfaces before each use for wear, damage, or deformation.
  • Match clamp size and WLL to the material and job requirements.
  • Always engage the locking mechanism fully before lifting, and use the latch for safe release.
  • Keep components clean and properly lubricated for safe and smooth operation.
  • Observe minimum load guidelines for correct jaw engagement.
